AkzoNobel
AkzoNobel, a company specializing in marine paint products for a niche market.
Project Background
AkzoNobel needed to expand office and testing facilities without sacrificing storage or relocating. Heighton designed a structural mezzanine, integrating a spray booth below and office space above, maximizing capacity while maintaining seamless operations and business continuity.
The Challenge
AkzoNobel, faced a space shortage at their existing facility. While the location was ideal and essential for their operations, they had outgrown the available space and needed to expand. The company required additional office space for meetings, training, and conferences, as well as a new spray booth for testing their paint materials. However, the facility lacked sufficient room on the ground floor to accommodate both the office expansion and the spray booth installation, creating a significant challenge in finding a solution that would not disrupt existing storage capacity.
The Solution
Heighton developed an innovative approach to address AkzoNobel’s space constraints. By designing a fully integrated facility that incorporated both the spray booth and office space into a structural mezzanine system, Heighton was able to maximize the use of the existing area. The new layout featured the spray booth on the ground floor, allowing for the testing of materials, while the first floor was equipped with a conference and meeting room to meet the company’s growing needs for office space. This mezzanine solution effectively created additional floorspace, enabling AkzoNobel to expand their capabilities without relocating or sacrificing valuable storage space. The project’s design not only optimized the use of vertical space but also maintained a seamless flow between different operational areas, enhancing the overall functionality of the facility.
The Results
The successful implementation of the mezzanine system allowed AkzoNobel to retain their existing storage capacity while gaining the additional space needed for a spray booth and a new meeting and conference area. This solution enabled the company to remain in their current location, which was critical for maintaining business continuity. The expanded facility now provides AkzoNobel with the infrastructure needed to support growth, improve training and meeting capabilities, and continue testing their marine paint products efficiently. The project has enhanced operational flexibility and prepared the company for future demands.
