How High Should a Mezzanine Floor Be?

How High Should a Mezzanine Floor Be

If you’re researching mezzanine floors because you’re thinking about investing in one for your business, you will probably want to know what the height requirement is. This is because there are national building standards that require your mezzanine to meet a minimum height, and for your building to be a certain height to accommodate the floor as well. When designing your mezzanine floor, the height will also depend on the type of business you’re running, and the kind of space you have available.

What to consider

Aside from the building standards which you can read more about below, here are the things you will want to consider when designing your mezzanine floor.

Proportions

Some recommend that the mezzanine floor should be one third to half the height of the floor to the ceiling for aesthetic purposes. If you do want an aesthetic mezzanine office or floor, choosing the right height to allow for a higher ceiling is always the preferred option.

Height/length of products, equipment, and machinery

If you have large, bulky goods, equipment, or machinery in your facility, you should take this into consideration when choosing the height of your floor.

Number of levels

Consider how many mezzanine levels you would like, if you would potentially want a third level later on, don’t make the second level too high.

Australian Building Regulation standards

Following the Australian Building Regulation standards, if you’re installing a mezzanine floor in your Australian business, it needs to be at least 210cm above the ground. Your building must also have a ceiling height of 440cm or over. This ensures adequate safety and headroom for users.
